Thanksgiving
01 December 2002

I disappeared there, didn't I? Writing a draft of a paper will do that to you. You'll be happy to know I've been accepted into Holidailies, which means I've promised to update at least twenty times in the month of December. There are lots of good people in the group, so visit the portal every day for fresh content! Isn't that a great thing?

So we went to Milwaukee for Thanksgiving, and now we are back. We got to see a number of Greg's friends, most of whom don't live in Milwaukee, strangely enough. Mike and Barb live in Chicago, but Barb's from Milwaukee so they were in town for the holiday and we had lunch on Friday at this great little Mexican place on Brady Street. While we were sitting at lunch, Greg's cell phone rang. It was his friend Andrew (from NYC), who was in town for a funeral, didn't know we were in town, and was just randomly calling Greg to ask him where a good movie theatre in Milwaukee was. So that was totally random (as I've already said, but it is after all 11:22 PM), and while Andrew never did make it to a movie, we got together with him that night for Kopp's custard (mint chip with special chocolate...mmm) and some chat in his hotel room.

We, however, did see a movie. We saw the completely magnificent Far From Heaven, which stars an incredibly luminous Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, and President Palm...er, Dennis Haysbert. The movie was marvelous - every moment of it was marvelous - but if you're looking for happy, well, this isn't it. It does feature the most incredible clothes. I wanted everything Julianne Moore was wearing, especially these unbelievable peacock satin elbow-length gloves. I'd be perfectly happy being a 1950's housewife if it meant I could have those clothes. (Here's a terrific review from salon.com)

The best part about seeing the movie was we saw it at the Oriental, a meticulously restored and maintained 1920's movie house. It has these huge Buddhas, and gilded ceilings, and elephants, and a balcony and an organ and it's just amazing. This was my first time there, although it was my fourth trip to Milwaukee. The Oriental expanded in 1988 and added two other screens without touching any of the original architecture, and the other two screens are just normal boring theatres. It's not worth going to the Oriental unless you want to see what's playing on the big screen, and this was the first time that something we wanted to see coincided with our trip.

We flew Midwest Express, the airline that gives you warm chocolate chip cookies. I worked on my paper draft (and finished it). We slept ten hours almost every night. We read the paper every day and watched some of the FX Buffy marathon. We went to Half Price Books and some CD stores, and I actually bought more CDs and DVDs than Greg did (a first). I bought a pre-pregnancy book (no, there are no current plans) and boy, was his mom happy. I forgot to tape the new Muppet Christmas special (did anyone tape it? please email me). We showed his dad how to use amazon.com. We ate a lot, and I don't think I gained any weight (also a first). We bought 7 year aged cheddar. Our return flight was delayed, but we are home, and we watched Alias, and it was good.

Now there will be bed. And then there will be work. And more entries.

I'm still taking names for cards. You know you want one. Come on, it's December now. Surely you want to think about cards now. No reciprocation necessary - but I'd love one, if you want to send one. Just make sure to ask for the address.
