Honeymoon: San Juan Island, Part Two
09 September 2002

Okay, the promised picture-mostly entry! We took a sunset kayak trip on Sunday night, which sounded like a great idea. We'd never kayaked before, but the outfit assured us it was easy and the trip was only two hours, so how hard could that be?

Really freaking hard. Ow. Can you say ow? We sure could after two hours kayaking. I mean...the first hour, it's really cool. But then the back and the shoulders start to ache, and when you're on a guided kayak tour, you know what? You can't just say Hey, I'm tired - let's pull over! Oh no, ya gotta keep on kayaking. Thank God we had a hot tub, because while at the beginning of the trip we were all Oooh, a harbor seal! Oooh, a bald eagle! Oooh, a house that Tom Cruise owns (really)! Oooh, the sunset!, by the end we were uttering some really unpleasant phrases. Next time we kayak (if we kayak again), I would definitely just rent the kayaks so we could go at our leisure. It sure was a beautiful sunset, though:

oooh, the sunset!

oooh, the sunset again! later!

On our last night there, we went out to Lime Kiln Point to try to see some whales. Apparently, no one called the whales and told them we were coming, so no whales for us. A deer came right out on the path while we were walking to the rocks, though, and that was cool - but alas, no whales. However, we met two lovely women there, and one of them took our picture. (Were you beginning to doubt we were actually there together?)

look! us!

The sunset that night was also exquisite:

never too many sunsets

And this is my very favorite scenic photo of the trip, the one I think looks most like a postcard. I was very happy with the way this came out.

my favorite picture

That was our last night on the Island. We drove all over the place on our four days there, tooling around in the convertible, and we had a great dinner at the Front Street Ale House in Friday Harbor (they had pear cider on tap! woo!) and I had a crab while sitting on an outdoor deck overlooking the harbor and we had ice cream and bought used books and tried to use the grill at the cabin (couldn't get it to start) and hot tubbed and hot tubbed and hot tubbed, and it was wonderful. If you ever get to the Islands, we recommend staying in that cabin if you do nothing else!

And then the next day, we were off to Vancouver...but that, of course, is for another entry.
