Honeymoon
14 June 2002

Before I talk about what I really wanted to talk about, let me just say this: it's the middle of June, and I wore a sweater today. And a jacket. And closed toed shoes with socks. And heavy jeans. What's up with that?

So. Remember how we weren't going on a honeymoon, because we wanted to save our money for a really good one and the summer is so busy and it's so insanely expensive to go to Europe in the summer and we had no time to plan it because we planned the wedding so fast?

Well, we're taking a honeymoon in August, and we just planned the whole thing in about 48 hours. We're not going to Europe because it is insanely expensive to go in the summer (though we plan to still go next year after the bank account recovers), but we are going to the Pacific Northwest. When we were voluntarily bumped off our flight to Jacksonville at Easter, Delta gave us vouchers. We thought they were free flight vouchers, but they ended up being for $200 off. Okay, not a free flight, but not bad. We thought about San Fransisco, but realized that the law school convention is held there every three years so we should get to SF sometimes (and basically for free). Most Southern places are hot. We thought about other areas of California, but there are too many people there to see and that would be lovely, but it would be come All Friends and No Honeymoon and we didn't want that either.

So we picked Seattle initially, and added from there. The final itinerary looks like this:

On August 13 we fly to Seattle (with round trip tickets that cost us $60 apiece). We stay three nights in the Camlin Hotel, which is in downtown Seattle (on the fringe of downtown, but downtown - and it only cost us $70 a night on Priceline, which is pretty damn cheap for that area). We're not sure exactly what we're doing there yet, though we know we'll spend a little time with a couple of Greg's friends. We plan to take the ferry to Bainbridge Island, where I used to live (we moved in second grade), and hit the Pacific Science Center and Pike Place Market and the Experience Music Project. And eat. And shop. We want to see the most in Seattle, so that'll be the hectic-y part of the honeymoon.

On the 16th we leave Seattle and drive to Anacortes, where we catch a ferry to San Juan Island. We're spending four nights staying in the Cabin of Two Bears, which looks amazing, doesn't it? Totally secluded, and has an outdoor hot tub. Woo! There's not much to do on the Island, so we plan on being slug-like and maybe trying kayaking or taking a two hour whale watching cruise. And being slug-like. Did I mention that? If we're really ambitious, we'll catch a ferry one day to Victoria, BC. Or not.

On the 20th we leave San Juan Island and drive (we think - the getting from place to place part is what we haven't decided on yet) to Vancouver and spend three nights staying at Barclay House, an amazing looking (and, thanks to our dollar, very reasonable) B&B that is smack dab in the middle of everything. Fabulous location, and according to the girl on the phone, fabulous breakfast. We're staying in the West Room, if you're curious. A lovely room with private bath and full breakfast in the center of downtown for...$105 a night. Gotta love that exchange rate (sorry, Canada).

Then on the 23rd it's back to Seattle for just one night, which we're spending at the Doubletree Airport Hotel - a three star hotel for which I paid $50 on Priceline. That was the scam of the trip. We fly out the next morning at noon.

We are so excited! If anyone has any favorite places in these spots, please email me. Being a Greg and a Melissa, we are most interested in used book and CD stores (and Lush, of course, but I know about that already!). We're also big ethnic food eaters (although Indian and my tummy don't like each other, so that's out).

No honeymoon to honeymoon in two days. What can I say? We move fast. That sucked up the last two days, so there's nothing new with the wedding site. I'm trying - but we all know how much I suck at design, and trying to come up with a simple framing device for the entry pages is killing me. Notice how the Romanticism site is still in the "help me, this isn't working" stage? Yeah. (It's just so green! Is it too green?)

To hold you over, here's a couple of gratuitous wedding shots. These are courtesy of both my camera (operated by my dear Steve) and Corina and Kymm's new digital (I forget whose are whose!):

oh so sexy.

Oh yeah. Workin' the fishface.

Corina touches up my nails while we wait for Claire's Boutique to open (the secret shame moment of the day). I like this picture because it shows the back of my hair.
